History of Shealy
Eye Laser Center
The Shealy Eye Laser Center began its
involvement in refractive surgery in the early 1990's, with the introduction
of radial keratotomy at our center which was developed by Soviet eye
surgeon, S.N. Fyodorov. Approximately 6,000 RK procedures were performed by
early 1994. At this time, Dr. Shealy began performing
lamellar procedures
developed by Dr. Luis Ruis and Jose Barraquer to correct higher ranges of
refractive error using automated lamellar microkeratomes. This technique was also used
successfully to treat all degrees and types of refractive error both
farsightedness and nearsightedness, but in many instances was combined with
incisional
keratotomy.
In January 1996, we acquired an excimer laser developed by Theo Seiler, Ph.D., MD, in Erlangen, Germany, and we have
used this laser along with the microkeratome as a further improvement in
correction of refractive error. This marked the birth of LASIK or Laser
Assisted Intrastromal Keratomileusis, which we referred to as laser vision
correction. The Shealy Eye Laser Center has performed nearly 38,000 eye surgeries
with 20,000 strictly related to laser vision correction since 1996.
ALK (Automated Lamellar Keratomileusis) has allowed us to correct nearly
all prescriptions, regardless of the amount of refractive error up to 12.00
diopters of myopia, 7.00 diopters of
hyperopia, and 8.00 diopters of
astigmatism. It has been used after
radial keratotomy,
keratomileusis, and
cataract surgery to further sharpen vision.
Since 1996, we have acquired and
experienced four excimer lasers including the Summit Apex Plus, Summit Excimer,
Allegretto, and the Nidek Excimer. Each has specific features that allow broad
beam expansion to scanning beams to flying spots with wavefront algorithms.
The Allegretto Wave Front flying spot with a 200-hertz tracker has produced
a gain of best corrected vision 60% of the time in
myopia and 44% of the
time in hyperopia, according to FDA studies. 98% of our patients state that
they see better than they ever saw with glasses or contacts.
Since 2004, we have been performing
additive procedures such as Advanced Surface Ablation,
No-Cut Epi-Laser, or
keratome assisted laser vision correction. These allow patients to have
surgery who considered laser vision corrections but were afraid to do such
because of larger prescriptions, dry eyes or thins corneas, and the
invasiveness of femtosecond lasers or
mechanical keratome systems. Dr.
Shealy was the "Featured Ophthalmologist" by the American Board of Eye
Surgery in 2004. Our center has been solely dedicated to laser
vision correction since 2004, and we use primarily the non-invasive
Advanced
Surface Ablation for safety-first considerations.
In 2004, the center became the first
in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan to offer the Allegretto Wavelight Laser
for Wavefront Optimized Ablations and Wavefront Guided Ablations.
In 2006, Dr. Shealy was one of the first ten surgeons
in the United States to dedicate his practice entirely to laser vision
correction. He has 30 years of experience in ophthalmology and has performed
over 38,000 vision correction procedures. The Wavelight Ocular Analyzer, was
added to our practice in 2006. This analyzer is linked to the
Allegretto Wave
Laser for treating previous patients with higher order
aberrations
associated with nighttime glare and haloes from laser treatments.
In 2007, the center adopted Advanced
Surface Treatment as the sole procedure performed, and completely
abandoned conventional LASIK for "safety first" considerations. Our
patient demographics in 2007 were 22% Indiana, 33% Michigan, 30% Ohio and
the balance within the United States and Canada. We have performed laser
vision correction for over 500 service men and women, mostly
serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We learned in 2007 how to make surface
laser vision correction comfortable and produce a faster visual recovery
time to about 3 ½ to 4 ½ days. Haze was prevented with the use of
Mitomycin-C and comfort was improved with the use of contact lenses and
Xibrom, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication.
By 2008, our center adopted SBK (thin
flap laser vision correction) with the mechanical microkeratome. This
lessened the risk of ectasia, reduced dry eye side effects, and was found
to be more compatible with presbyopic LASIK or multifocal implants. SBK
with the mechanical microkeratome greatly improved quality of vision, and
produced instantaneous "Wow, wow!" vision.
We became very excited about our
outcomes with laser vision correction making almost all people
candidates. Our knowledge and experience with laser vision correction in
2009 are the subject material of this website.

Our Staff
Our practice is known for its
friendly and knowledgeable staff. Our team consists of hardworking,
compassionate individuals who are committed to giving our patients
nothing less than the best.
Here are the people who make the Shealy Eye Laser Center a success!

Dr. Thomas A. Shealy,
M.D.
Ophthalmologist, M.S., Ph.D. (Candidate), Board Certified in
Laser/LASIK Surgery
Dr. Thomas A. Shealy is the medical director of the Shealy Eye Laser
Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He performs Laser Vision Correction to
improve eyesight. His goal is to provide high performance vision, in
which his patients state, they see better than they did with glasses or
contact lenses over 98% of the time. His desire is to treat patients on
a one to one basis, which include, many of his own family members. His
services are to limit his practice to those patients who will
appreciate what he does so that he may in return provide quality care to
satisfy their visual needs.

Dave
Laser Engineer
Dave has been operating and calibrating the laser with utmost care for
five years, since the center first acquired it’s Allegretto Wave Laser.
He is a graduate of Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. Dave has not
been able to undergo laser vision correction due to slightly irregular
corneal mapping.

Chi
Laser Vision Coordinator
Chi has received an Associates Degree in Medical Assisting and a
Bachelors Degree in Business Science at International Business College
in 2005. Chi works on a personal level with the patients in addressing
concerns and making our patients feel more comfortable and relaxed at
our center. Chi has undergone AST for a small
prescription and now sees 20/10. She is in the Army Guard Reserve, and
now enjoys the same visual freedom that over 400 other military
personnel that Dr. Shealy has helped to see better. "My
eye doctor suggested that I was not a candidate for laser vision
correction because of my astigmatism and that I would be back in
contacts or glasses in the next couple of years and my vision would be
the same as it was and that I would not see any better than I did with
glasses or contacts. I feel that that is not true in my case and I am
very happy with my new and improved vision!"
Brian
Office Assistant
Brian has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Western
Michigan University. Most of his experience lies accounting and tax
preparation. He works on a personal level with the patients, helping
Dr. Shealy and Chi by making them feel more comfortable and relaxed.
He also helps Dr. Shealy and the staff with inter-office operations
and office organization and he is
proving to be a very important asset to the Shealy Eye Laser
Center.
Kathy
Webmaster
Kathy has been a successful commercial artist for decades. She has
been providing technical support and computer management at our
center since Spring 2005. Dr. Shealy says, “Kathy is the best
webmaster in the world!”

Our Technology
ALLEGRETTO WAVE’s laser employs a proprietary overlapping
method to ensure accurate laser placement, and is one of the ways that
ALLEGRETTO WAVE achieves a rounder, more natural corneal surface than many other
lasers used for vision correction, and is capable of producing some of the
largest available optical zones.
The success of the ALLEGRETTO WAVE can be directly measured by our patients’ remarkable improvement in visual acuity and low occurrence of side effects.
