ALLEGRETTO WAVE™
Right. From the Start.
Patient Satisfaction Increased with Allegretto
Wave™
Improved Predictability. Improved Outcomes. Reduced Enhancements.
On
the first day of post-op visits after using the Allegretto Wave, Doyle
Stulting, MD of Emory Laser Vision noticed a difference in what patients
said about their vision. "One of my very first Allegretto Wave patients
was middle-aged male, -5D SE OU. My habit at the first post-op visit is
to ask a non-committal question like, 'How's your vision?' He said,
'This is the best vision I've ever had' I said, 'That's great, you're
seeing well?' And he said, 'No you don't understand, this is the best
vision I've EVER had.' He went on to tell me how he would wake up each
night and reach for his glasses before getting out of bed. He'd have to
walk beyond the foot of the bed to see the clock on his VCR. The night
of his surgery, he sat up in bed, looked across the room and could read
the time. A small action, but a huge event in this man's mind. This was
the best vision he'd ever had."

Patient
reactions to the vision delivered by Allegretto Wave have been
impressive. From subjective comments during post-op visits to
objective measurements of vision quality and acuity, this report
examines on of the key benefits surgeon have seen upon adoption
of the Allegretto Wave system ― an increasing incidence of
improved vision beyond what patients could see pre-operatively
with glasses or contacts.

Getting
to 'Wow!" Immediately
Marika
Chasse, practice administrator for Dr. Stulting, notes an
immediate benefit post-surgery with Allegretto Wave patients.
"Right after surgery in the recovery room, we notice people
checking their vision. Because they're not dilated, they have
that instant 'Wow!' We never saw this with our old platform. And
Day 1 post-ops are fabulous. It seems every single patient is
20/15. With our prior Custom treatment, we'd see patients who
were 20/30 or 20/40, with only an occasional 20/15. It was more
rare than the norm. With Allegretto Wave, 20/15 happens all the
time."
Results from
Dr. Stephen Brint's practice in New Orleans, LA verify the rapid
vision improvement seen by patients treated on the Allegretto
Wave. "The enthusiasm of our Allegretto Wave patients on Day 1
is infectious," says Dr. Brint. "It's just a rarity for someone
not to be perfect, which makes Saturday morning post-ops a
pleasure!"

The Happiness Factor
Dr. Jay Bansal of LaserVue Eye
Centers in Northern California integrated the Allegretto Wave into
his Santa Rosa facility in 2004. "I felt there was an ethical issue
with only providing a standard LASIK treatment when the Allegretto
Wave was approved and could extend the range of wavefront-optimized
treatments to a much greater number of my patients. I wanted all of
my patients to have wavefront-optimized LASIK. Incorporating this
laser has changed the way I counsel patients pre-operatively, and
the amount of time I need to spend reassuring them
post-operatively."
"With Allegretto Wave, I have
significant confidence with hyperopes and high hyperopes ― up to
+5D. I used to treat only to +2D, and then still needed to have
quality-of-vision discussions with them. Now I can treat to +5D,
achieve a great result immediately, and have patients with very high
quality of vision."
"Another difference is how I
counsel high cylinder patients," says Dr. Bansal. "Previously, I'd
have a lengthy pre-op discussion cautioning about glare and halos
expected after surgery. Now with the larger treatment OZ and prolate
ablation of the Allegretto Wave,
there
is a reduced need for these preventative discussions. The level of
patient satisfaction port-operatively ― what I call the Happiness
Factor ― is so much greater. Comparing Allegretto Wave vs. the
traditional treatment I used to offer, I know that post-op time has
decreased. I don't have to hand-hold about anything. Patient
discussions are now about their excitement, and instructions about
drops. Allegretto Wave has helped increase my surgical referrals
from 50% to 63%. That statistic alone speaks volumes about how happy
these patients are with their LASIK."

Reduced Enhancements
Dr. Bansal has also noticed a
dramatic improvement in his enhancement rate vs. standard LASIK.
"The biggest difference I see is in acuities ― getting to them and
holding them. Previously, a patient would be great in one month, but
would have slipped substantially by one year. Now I see much less
regression. I've gone from 4% enhancements to less than 1%. I've
done only 4 Allegretto enhancements in my first 1,000 eyes. I've
been very, very pleased."
Dr. Stulting notes similar
improvement. "The real headache in a refractive practice is with a
patient who comes in and isn't happy with their quality of vision.
Acuities are fine, but there's just something not right with the
vision quality. We'd have a hard time offering a solution to that
patient. Likewise for the patient that pays a higher fee for Custom
LASIK and then ends up significantly hyperopic. We noticed with our
other platform that we had too may outliers. Complaints of glare or
halos. Overcorrections. Undercorrections. Inconsistencies between
eyes. We spoke with the manufacturer, buy they indicated it must be
a problem with our staff ― unstable visions, inaccurate refractions,
that sort of thing. So we invited them in and had their trainer
check our calculations. Perform the captures. Run the laser. That
day we treated a dentist who was a low myope, with significant
higher-order aberrations. And he came back significantly hyperopic - +1.75
and +1.00D. We have just not seen that sort of variability on the Allegretto
Wave. Our enhancement rate is not 1/3 of what it was before."
Improved predictability.
Improved outcomes. Reduced enhancements. These are all elements that
take refractive surgery to a new level of accuracy. Satisfied
patients and improved vision are the cornerstone of success with
Allegretto Wave.
